The Alexandria Housing Development Corporation (AHDC) is proud to announce that The Station at Potomac Yard, its newly opened affordable housing project, is the recipient of a 2009 Virginia Housing Award, just announced on November 19th, at the Governor’s Housing Conference in Norfolk. These awards recognize outstanding and innovative efforts in crafting effective solutions to Virginia’s complex array of housing needs. The Station at Potomac Yard was recognized in the newly created category:, Mixed Use or Mixed Income Housing Development. This category celebrates the creation of economically diverse communities that address a range of human needs. Here, Mildrilyn Davis and Helen McIlvaine, Director and Deputy Director of the Alexandria Office of Housing, and Jim Pritchett, Executive Director of AHDC accept the award at the conference.

The Station at Potomac Yard was selected as it meets multiple community needs in the City of Alexandria, a dense, high-cost exurb just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Located on a former rail yard site, the project’s innovative mixed-use design, which combines a fire station, 64 units of affordable and workforce rental housing and retail space, maximizes the use of land in a built-up environment. The project meets two green building certifications standards. The ground level fire rescue station has been designed to meet LEED® silver requirements and the housing component conforms to EarthCraft program guidelines to enhance energy efficiency and provide long-term utility savings for residents. To minimize potential impacts of the fire rescue station on the housing units, substantial noise reduction technologies have also been included in the building’s design and construction. AHDC and the City of Alexandria jointly celebrated the Grand Opening of The Station on October 17th and the residential units and the retail space are currently in the process of being leased.
