Bozzuto Group Breaks Ground on The Views at Clarendon in Arlington County

Community Advisors will finally break ground
Saturday on The Views at Clarendon, a hotly
debated — and long delayed — project in
Arlington.
The $40 million development will include 46
market-rate apartments and 70 affordable rental
units that will be a mix of studios, one, two and
three-bedrooms.
The first two stories of the 10-story building will
be used for the First Baptist Church of Clarendon. The church portion will keep the steeple from its
original 1950s structure.
Originally approved by the county in 2004, the Views at Clarendon has faced strong opposition
from neighbors unhappy with its height and the fact that Arlington is allowing multifamily units on a
site originally zoned for commercial and single residential uses.
Neighbors said the project was inappropriate for it’s 1210 N. Highland St. location and took a
zoning case all the way to the Virginia Supreme Court. The supreme court ruled in favor of the
neighbors, but developers went back to the drawing board and Arlington approved the plan again in
February 2007.
There is currently an education building on site near Lyon Village that will remain.
Real construction will begin on the site in November with delivery slated for fall 2011.
The development sits about a half block from the
Clarendon Metro and was named a Smart Growth
Project by the Washington Smart Growth Alliance.
It is expected to receive at least a LEED Silver
rating.
The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing
serves as consultant for the project.
